What’s so special about L’WZAAR?

Giving you the full ocean-to-table experience, right by the beach in contemporary Katara, this is where you want to dine in Doha. Once you’ve spotted the most alluring fish or crustacean in our counter (charged by weight), you can decide how you’d like it cooked – in Mediterranean, Far Eastern, Arabic or Japanese style. Our waiters can then guide you through the selection of starters, salads, soups and drinks. The dining room is buzzing and vast, so you might be seated on fuchsia floor cushions, on cream leather banquettes, or on stools up at the bar - and while some tables have sea views, others invite you to keep a watchful eye on the slick open kitchen.

Like it fresh?

Our local fish and shellfish is hauled directly from dhow to counter-top on a daily basis, but we also go to great lengths to import the finest foreign varieties: our salmon, mussels, clams, scallops, sea bass, tuna, mud crabs, cockles and oysters arrive twice a week from Europe, and we make sure they travel from source to plate with as little fuss as possible. All of these offerings are all lined up in the market area, all shimmery-gilled and bright-eyed, so you can pick your dinner. The daily list is made up of 47 items, among which Emirati favourites include sherri fish, hammour and safi.

If you’re planning to impress a loved one or host a dinner party, you can pick up a couple of beauties to prepare at home – you’ll be charged by weight as you would in the restaurant. Just ask if you need help filleting.

On the table

L’WZAAR’s top picks...

Steamed Hammour
Savour the full flavour of your surroundings by opting for regional fish: our locally sourced varieties taste best exactly as they come - order your favourite, and test the freshness for yourself.
Lobster Thermidor
This French dish is as luxurious as seafood gets: the lobster meat is mixed with a creamy, cheesy, mustardy sauce, and then stuffed back into the shell to be browned in the oven.
Japanese Unagi
The fresh water eels are teamed with perfectly cooked vinegared rice. Our chefs press the sushi rice into their hands to create a rectangular mound, and the eels are draped across the top.

A forgotten heritage

In a pre-oil era, Doha was a modest, glitz-free fishing and pearling village. Qatar’s economy depended on the endeavours of Man and his Boat right up until the early 20th century, and sea-based trades were the main sources of income. Fishermen and divers passed skills and methods down through generations, while others learned to fashion intricate tools and build strong, elegant dhows to carry crews of men and their spoils. The traditional boats still bob out on Doha’s horizon, but these days they’re powered by engines, rather than sea breeze. And much like fishing, boat building remains an industry of tradition and a source of great local pride – you can still see craftsmen in action at boat yards near the port.

Health & Science

Why Omega-3 is more than a foodie fad

One of the all-time great nutrients, omega-3, is the name given to a family of unsaturated fatty acids found in oily fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines and anchovies. Its benefits are impressive – it boosts brain power, keeps the heart healthy, sharpens vision and strengthens bones. It’s what the pros call a ‘good fat’, which means it also helps the body to absorb vitamins A, E, D and K - all vital for healthy skin, heart and circulation. Two to three doses per week will ensure you glow.
